June Lost Legacy Prize Won Already By Donald Boudreaux
Don Boudreaux publishes a piece in a Blog, Spontaneous Order, which I did not know of until today, and it’s good sense too. The letter to the New York Times was written last October and Boudreaux’s piece was published today in the Blog (?).
“The same Adam Smith who Brooks praises later in his column famously explained how, while individuals don't come up with solutions to economic questions alone, they nevertheless together do find such solutions as they interact in commercial society. And, Smith showed, not only is government not needed to answer economic questions, its attempts to do so too often misfire. The same is true of morality. The fact that it is social does not mean that it must be created by government.”
However, the letter is to the point and absolutely on target. I reproduce a paragraph from it. That expresses Adam Smith's Legacy as it should be stated, without any misattribution whatsoever.
Its early in the new month, but I am inclined to award Donald Boudreaux the June Adam Smith Lost Legacy prize.
